Happy Mother’s Day from Slice!

Happy Mother’s Day from Slice!

Did you know that Mother’s Day is a global celebration that occurs around the world? For example, in Greece, Mother’s Day is the second Sunday of May; in Indonesia, it’s December 22; in Israel it’s Shevat 30 of the Jewish calendar, which in 2012, corresponds to January 30.  As May 13th rapidly approaches, flowers and gifts are delivered en masse in the U.S.

At Slice, we have seen the purchase of all types of flowers from orchids, bromeliads, and tulips, to roses and daffodils, in quantities emblematic of how much we appreciate our mothers.  And it’s not just flowers – we’ve been seeing a lot of chocolate, too, as well as purchases from Edible Arrangements and an endless variety of items from specialty retailers. It’s evident that people have been searching extensively for that perfect gift!

However, flowers remain among the most popular gifts, and this affection between children and mothers is particularly highlighted in the arrangement names from a popular merchant, 1-800 flowers.com:

Another update for the Slice Android app (v1.4)

For a couple of weeks, we were making some minor patches and enhancements and releasing them pretty quickly. But with the latest 1.4 release, we wanted to take some time to focus on a few key features that our users have been asking for:

  1. Adding your own packages: we’re pretty good at picking up most, if not all, your tracking email confirmations from your inbox. But what about those packages that don’t have email receipts like the package you’re sending to your mom for Mother’s Day? Well we thought this was important too. So now you can select a carrier and type in a tracking # and track these packages just like you do with your other online purchases.
  2. Customizing your push notifications: well this one caught us off-guard as we figured everybody would always want a push notification for their packages. Well it turns out that a lot of folks don’t want to keep hearing the noise & vibrate for every package status. So we introduced the ability to customize these notifications in your settings: turn them on of off by type, turn the sound & vibrate on or off. Taking a cue from Burger King: “have it your way”.

Find last-minute tax deductions with Slice

Tax time. The words alone fill most of us with dread. And despite last year’s solemn promise to get organized in advance, many of us still wait until the last minute to file. But if you’re able to take deductions for things you’ve purchased, Slice may be able to help shave a few minutes off of your tax prep this year. And at this point, every minute helps.

A user wrote into us last week:

“Doing my taxes and needed to find receipts for all the textbooks I purchased last year … ugh … logged into Slice and BINGO! Done in less than five minutes. This is AWESOME!”

If you’re an individual with a lot of deductions or especially if you have a small business, you’ll want to use Slice to extract every possible penny. Here’s how:

First, go to your Purchase History. If you know exactly what you’re looking for, you can search for it by name. If you don’t, you can filter by category or merchant to find items you might have forgotten about.  Popular categories for deductions include:

  • Books & Magazines
  • Electronics & Accessories
  • Mobile Apps & Software
  • Office Products

iPad 3: White vs. Black, Verizon vs. AT&T, East vs. West

Apple may have sold upwards of 3 million iPad 3s, a staggering stat that’s dominating headlines, but the long awaited tablet is also attracting some negative attention thanks to frustrating Wi-Fi connectivity issues. Here at Slice, we helped our users track close to 3,000 iPad 3 shipments so far, nearly 0.1 percent of all iPad 3s sold worldwide, and noticed some interesting trends. Let’s take a closer look.

Despite the negative publicity swirling around the Wi-Fi connectivity issue, most people (57 percent) went with the basic Wi-Fi only models, which go for $499. Of the users who chose to shell out the extra $130 for additional 4G cellular connectivity, more chose AT&T over Verizon as their carrier, possibly an indication that the original iOS carrier still remains top of mind. Meanwhile, the most popular models were the most basic version (the 16GB Wi-Fi only version) and the version with the most bells and whistles (the 64GB Wi-Fi + 4G LTE version). Looks like people mostly either went for the bare bones model or went all out. Speaks to the “go big or go home” mentality.
